It’s probably the most well-known winning streak in professional wrestling, but we might have to wait to see if it continues.
PWInsider.com reports that the current physical condition of The Undertaker has raised some concerns at WWE Headquarters that he may not be ready to go for WrestleMania 29. If that is the case, then this would be the first time since 2000 that the Deadman would not be on the roster.
According to the report, Undertaker (real name Mark Calaway) had told WWE several months ago that he planned to appear April 7 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Plans were launched to have him possibly face CM Punk for victory No. 21.
But instead of being set in concrete, those plans right now look to be in wet cement, according to the report:
The story making the rounds the last few days was that Undertaker's physical well being was being called into question and it was no longer fully confirmed he would be working
the show.
PWInsider.com also reports that this is not the first time WWE has waffled on an Undertaker appearance at WrestleMania. Each time, according to the report, Undertaker was able to show up and perform.
Undertaker, who will turn 48 a couple of weeks before WrestleMania 29, has developed a laundry list of nagging injuries over the years. That list includes a broken cheek bone, a broken orbital bone around his eye, a nagging back, a broken ankle, a sliced ear, multiple muscle tears and hip surgery.
He also suffered minor burns at the 2010 Elimination Chamber when a pyrotechnic display malfunctioned during his entrance. Normally, his entrances are chilling and calculating, but on this night, he ripped off his burning overcoat and ran to the ring to douse himself with water.
His last two WrestleMania matches against Triple H appeared to take a huge toll on Undertaker’s body. At WrestleMania 27 in Atlanta, he had to be assisted from the ring. Last year in Miami, both he and Triple H appeared totally gassed after their “End of an Era” match inside a steel cage.
In addition to his injuries, Undertaker also has a new family to look after. Last summer, he and his third wife, former WWE Diva Michelle McCool, welcomed a baby daughter—McCool’s first child and his fourth.
Since beating Jimmy Snuka in less than five minutes at WrestleMania VII, the Undertaker has yet to lose on WWE’s grandest stage. The list of superstars he has left in his wake over the past 22 years reads like a who’s who of WWE talent—Ric Flair, Randy Orton, Kane, Shawn Michaels, Triple H and the Big Show, just to name a few.
According to his Wikipedia page, Undertaker tore a pectoral muscle prior to the 2000 Royal Rumble and was unable to compete at that year’s WrestleMania.
Despite all those injuries, Undertaker still has managed to show up for WWE's biggest pay-per-view. Obviously, the WWE Universe will be pulling for him to appear this year too.
Undertaker’s rumored opponent at WrestleMania 29—CM Punk—lost the WWE Championship to The Rock at last Sunday’s Royal Rumble in Phoenix. Late last year, Punk underwent knee surgery, and WWE reportedly was trying to keep Punk as healthy as possible for an appearance against Undertaker at WrestleMania 29.
